Shank received a similar report about Trynn being spotted in Cosegan territory. His first inclination was to have him killed on sight, but he calmed down and allotted resources to capturing his old foe.

“Have you heard Trynn is back?” Jenso asked, walking into Shank’s office, a palatial ring of colored lights that she was always annoyed hadn’t been designed by her team. If asked, she would have said that it was too big, too bright, and the frequencies were wrong. But no one asked.

“Yes, I saw something on that.”

“Aren’t you worried?”

“Worried? About Trynn?” He laughed. “The fact that he’s back—if it’s true—simply shows he is powerless. We have stripped him of all resources. The Eysen Maker had no power.”

“You underestimate him.”

“No, I don’t.”

“Have you sent a unit to apprehend him?”

“I wouldn’t waste my time,” he lied.

“If he comes to Solas, I will see him,” she said, in a subtle reference to the surveillance she had built into the city of her design. “But he won’t be that crazy.”

“Trynn is a disaster, but he’s not stupid,” Shank agreed. “We won’t see him in Solas.”

She pulled her long white hair behind her, revealing the fullness of her dark face. The action gave Shank a rare glimpse of the power in her eyes. He felt the force of her stare physically weaken him for an instant, but quickly convinced himself he’d had too much Spressen at breakfast, a warm herbal energy drink favored by Cosegans.

“He may have returned because of Shanoah,” she said, letting her hair fall loose again. ”The Imazes took off this morning.”

“Of course,” Shank snapped. It infuriated him that Trynn had a personal relationship with the highest ranking Imaze, due to all the potential complications that held for preventing the Doom. But it was the fact that Trynn might be happy that angered him more. “Don’t worry too much about Trynn. He no longer matters.”

She smiled at his hypocrisy, and would have been worried if she thought he believed his words, because as long as Trynn lived, he would always be a problem. However, she also knew, better than most, that Shank could be as dangerous as Trynn, the Arc, or even the Havloses, and that worried her. But Jenso had reasons for her alliance with Shank, reasons that would test the limits of the Cosegans’ greatest technological advances over light, and the existence of the future.
